CCCC Stop The Violence Subcommittee

Chairperson:  Currently, there is not an official chairperson.

Meeting:  The Stop the Violence Subcommittee meets on an as needed basis.  The meetings are normally held in the DSS Commons Room.   Please contact Margaret P. Mitchell, Project Coordinator at 843.623.5274 or ccccmapm@shtc.net for information about any upcoming meetings or events.

Stop the Violence is a project funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services contracted through Clemson University Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life in partnership with Chesterfield County Coordinating Council.

Mission:  The mission of the Stop the Violence Project is to implement and sustain a program model to reduce the prevalence and incidence of intimate partner and family violence against girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 18, living in Chesterfield County.

Activities:  The Stop the Violence Project is based on a two year initiative.  During the first year, a working group was established to collect data.  Based on this data, the group analyzed and selected a program model that best fits the Chesterfield County area.  This model has five components:

1. A campaign to increase awareness of the incidence and prevalence of relationship violence among young people, and those factors associated with relationship violence;

2. A program of creative activities (e.g., fine arts; performing arts) providing opportunities   for young people to express their views on relationship violence and communicate these   views to their peers, adults, and the community as a whole;

3. A curriculum consisting of ten 45-minute sessions to be implemented in an appropriate   class (e.g., health course), after-school, or in community programs involving young   people;

4. Professional development on relationship violence and related concerns (e.g., substance   use) for community service providers working with young people;

5. After-school or community-based support groups for young people generally and for  victims of abuse specifically.

The program model will continue to be evaluated for effectiveness.

Participants:  The Stop the Violence Project is made up of volunteers who serve on the Chesterfield County Coordinating Council and teenagers in the community.  We are also recruiting individuals from the community who have a desire to stop the violence in Chesterfield County.  These include:
