This
is a project funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services
contracted through Clemson University Institute on Family and
Neighborhood Life in partnership with Chesterfield County
Coordinating Council.
Mission:
The mission of the SAMHSA Subcommittee is to provide the planning
infrastructure that will lead to a decrease in substance abuse,
increase in access to services, and promote the integration of
services.
Activities:
This Subcommittee’s major objective is to develop a strategic plan
to integrate mental health and substance abuse issues in our
community by developing a needs assessment and resource directory.
The Subcommittee has completed the initial phase of the project by
conducting surveys targeting treatment providers, church pastors,
and healthcare providers. These surveys were completed in 2003.
Focus groups were surveyed from a variety of sources which included
law enforcement, hospital, education and referral groups. In
addition, individual consumers using available community services
participated in targeted interviews.
Strategic
planning began in May, 2004 with broad based participation including
public and private sector attendance. This plan includes
short-term, mid-range and long term goals in providing easily
accessible treatment options to all citizens in Chesterfield County,
educational tools for health providers and the public, and an
awareness campaign throughout the County.
