The
Cheraw and Pageland Youth Development Coalitions (YDC) were each
formed as a result of combining the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention
Initiative (APPI) and the Governor’s Cooperative Agreement for
Prevention (G-CAP). Unlike all other county wide CCCC
Subcommittees, these Coalitions are town based due to funding issues
and the desire to include a diverse group of volunteer adults and
teens. View the website by clicking

MEETINGS:
The Cheraw YDC meets on the second
Tuesday of each month at 3:15 p.m. in the Cheraw High School Media
Center. The Pageland YDC meets on the third Tuesday of each
month at 3:30p.m. at New Heights Middle School.
* We invite all citizens to join, you do not have to be a member of
an organization, you just have to care about your community and its
kids!
GOAL:
The mission is to enhance
community-based strategies in Cheraw and Pageland to prevent risky
behaviors in youth ages 12–17 years old. The Coalitions seek
to provide the support, assistance and guidance needed for the
programs and services to keep our children safe and healthy.
Our focus is on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug
use, teen pregnancy, truancy, crime, violence and HIV/AIDS.
ACTIVITIES:
All activities are chosen based on a logic model using
evidence-based programs that decrease risk factors and increase
protective factors for positive youth development. Intensive
evaluation activities are included.
In
the middle schools at Long, New Heights, and the Palmetto Learning
Center, the All Stars program is used to help youth develop the
skills needed to make the right choices for staying healthy.
At the DJJ Office, a laptop computer is provided with an interactive
software program (PAW-Parenting Adolescents Wisely) to help enhance their parenting and
conflict-resolution skills. All interested parents can use this
free service by making an appointment at 623-2378.
During
June of each year, both the Cheraw and Pageland YDC sponsor a team
of 5–6 youth to send to the Teen Institute. The institute is
a week long, summer program that teaches youth substance abuse
prevention strategies and leadership skills. The Team uses
these skills to promote prevention programs throughout the next
school year.
Public
awareness activities include a monthly newsletter e-mailed to
approximately 180 subscribers, i.e., pastors, youth ministers,
Coalition members, and other agencies/organizations. Increased
community awareness is also done through featured articles in local
papers, radio talk shows, training events, and youth activities
promoting positive activities and family interaction
